Carbon Nanotube

Carbon nanotubes are being developed in Japan with anticipation of a wide range of applications because of their light weight, strength, and high electrical and thermal conductivity. Zeon Corporation ZEONANOR, which are single-walled carbon nanotubes manufactured using the super-growth method-a breakthrough synthesis technique developed by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. With excellent properties in specific surface area, aspect ratio, and purity, carbon nanotubes are expected to be applied to a wide range of fields, including energy and electronics.

SWCNT, a dream material developed in Japan

Carbon nanotubes, discovered by Dr. Sumio Iijima in 1991, are categorized according to their structure into single-walled nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled nanotubes (MWCNTs). Although SWCNTs offered the superior characteristics of tremendous flexibility coupled with lightness and high strength as well as extremely high levels of electrical and thermal conductivity, their use in practical applications was limited by high costs due to the low productivity.

Super growth method achieves mass production and high Functionality

The super growth method discovered by Dr. Kenji Hata and his team at AIST is a highly efficient method of SWCNT synthesis. This method boosted productivity more than 1,000-fold, enabling SWCNT synthesis that is high quality while offering major reductions in production costs. After further refining the super growth method and developing mass production techniques, Zeon Corporation began commercial production in 2016.

Wide range of applications anticipated in various fields

ZEONANOR SWCNTs features high aspect ratios, high purity, and a broad surface area, and its suitability for use in metal, rubber, and plastic composites makes it a dream material with potential for development of applied products with previously unachievable functions. ZEONANOR is expected to be suitable for a wide range of applications in various fields, including high-performance capacitors in the energy sector, next-generation devices in the electronics sector, highly functional rubber materials and high-thermal-conductivity materials in the high-performance materials sector, and the structural materials sector.

Assessing and managing safety

In cooperation with research facilities within and outside the Group, we assess impact of the human and environmental arising from carbon nanotubes synthesized by the super growth method, and do our utmost to manage safety handling associated with these materials and products derived from them. We manage the safety of our own operations, constantly sharing the most up-to-date safety data with our customers, national government agencies, and local authorities.

High Purity & Long single-walled nanotubes

ZEONANORSG101 Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube

Carbon nanotubes, discovered by Sumio Iijima in 1991, are categorized into single-walled nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled nanotubes (MWCNTs) by their structures. MWCNTs are easy to produce and have been developed in many applications. On the other hand, SWCNTs have not been developed very much because they are difficult to make.In 2004, Dr. Kenji Hata team at AIST* discovered a revolutionary method of SWCNT synthesis, which was named as "Super Growth Method". With the innovative technology, it was realized to produce high-quality SWCNT.
Zeon Corporation developed mass production technology of the method with the support of NEDO**.
ZEONANORSG101 is the SWCNT manufactured with "Super Growth Method" by Zeon Corporation.
