Zeon extracts isoprene from C5 fraction by the G.P.I. process (Zeon Process of Isoprene), an exclusive Zeon technology, and also focuses on world-pioneering research into the utilization of secondary elements extracted from C5 fraction.

Results of these research efforts have commercialized as distinctive Zeon products in three laboratories, that belong to their respective business divisions, including the Chemicals Laboratory, theSpecialty Chemicals Laboratoryand the RIM Laboratory.

Chemicals Laboratory

The Chemicals Laboratory has developed and improved a series of products, which are adhesive-related daily necessities, including tackifiers for adhesive tapes, hot-melt adhesives and binders for traffic paints. Other products associated with the Chemicals Laboratory include water reducers and super plasticizers for concrete.

Specialty Chemicals Laboratory

The Specialty Chemicals Laboratory has been conducting research and development into various areas from synthetic aromatics to medical and agricultural intermediates, through organic synthetic technology. In regard to synthetic aromatics, the laboratory released leaf alcohol for green aroma, which has been popular worldwide, along with methyl dihydrojasmonate (MDJ) for jasmine fragrances. A rich variety of related product lines have also been well received as demonstrating Zeon's position as the world's producer of green and jasmine product.

Other unique Zeon 5-cyclization compounds, such as cyclo-pentane, cyclo-pentene and cyclo-pentanone, are also developed in this laboratory.

cis-3-hexen-1-ol (leaf alcohol) made from 2-butyn, as a raw material along with leaf ester, are obtained from C5 fraction, and are representative green-type aromatics used in cosmetics, foods, and other products. Zeon commands an overwhelming share of the worldwide green aromatics market.

Methyl dihydrojasmonate, a representative synthetic aroma, made from cyclo-pentanon as its base material, is a typical jasmine-type aromatic and is used in such products as shampoos, rinses and soaps. CEPIONATE, which has a higher epimer methyl dihydrojasmonate density; methyljasmonate; and Zeppin, which has a higher epimer methyljasmonate density, are produced through Zeon's unique technology, and have developed an excellent reputation throughout the world.
