Production Begins on New Line of Retardation Film for LCD TVs ～Meeting Growing Demand for Larger TVs and Advances in High Definition Technology～
October 3, 2017
Zeon Corporation (President: Kimiaki Tanaka) has begun full-scale production of retardation film for LCD TVs at its new line at the optical film plant in Himi City, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. This boosts Zeon’s production capacity for the film from 95 million square meters to 119 million square meters per year.
Optes Inc., a Zeon Group manufacturing subsidiary, expanded producing retardation film for LCD TVs at the Himi manufacturing plant, which is located at the site of its Hokuriku Plant. The new and sixth line has a production capacity of 24 million square meters of film per year, so the total production capacity for retardation film has been raised to 119 million square meters per year.
Retardation film is a key component of LCDs because it enables a wide viewing angle* and contrast optimization, both essential for LCD TV image quality. Zeon’s ZeonorFilm™ possesses superior optical properties, including high transparency, low birefringence, low wavelength dispersion, low photoelasticity, and outstanding dimensional stability owing to low water absorbency and heat resistance. In recent years, the trends for increasingly larger TVs and advances in high definition technology, such as 4K and 8K TVs, have bolstered demand for ZeonorFilm™, which offers excellent optical properties and exceptional dimensional stability, and this demand is expected to be met as a result of the latest expansion at the Himi manufacturing plant.
