Reduction of Hazardous Chemical Substance Emissions into the Atmosphere

We are actively working to reduce emissions, primarily butadiene and acrylonitrile.

The Japan Chemical Industry Association is leading efforts to understand and reduce atmospheric emissions of 25 highest-priority substances. ZEON is actively working to reduce emissions of three of these substances used by the company.
In regard to butadiene, our Tokuyama Plant in fiscal 2008 switched to a production process that burns waste gas from monomer recovery.
We have been reviewing the operating status for monomer recovery for each product. We aim to continue reducing acrylonitrile emissions.

Reduction of Industrial Waste

Our improvement target for reducing the amount of industrial waste that is ultimately disposed of in landfills is 10% or less of the final landfill amount in 1995 (a target of 962 tons). This target was achieved in 2008 with a disposal of 471 tons. We are working toward further improvements under the bold target of zero emissions by reducing the amount of industrial waste ultimately disposed of in landfills to 0.1% or less of the actual disposal volume in 2007 (a target of less than 33.4 tons).
As a result, we reduced the total disposal volume for all plants to 1.9% in fiscal 2010. Notably, the Kawasaki, Tokuyama, and Mizushima plants successfully reduced waste to less than 0.1%. This was achieved through efforts such as incinerating more activated sludge and recycling waste plastic.
ZEON is also endeavoring to step up its sorting performance by encouraging recycling and other effective methods for reusing industrial waste.
